Getting into the Guinness Book of World Records is no small deal. And what can be said if the record is broken and recreated for four consecutive years and by the same persons?

S. Venkateswara Rao of Sri Bhakta Anjaneya Sweet of Tapeswaram said that it would be for the fourth year on the trot to enter the Guinness Book of World Records for making the biggest laddu in the world. And all the four times, the sweet was made during the Vinayaka Chavithi.

This year, they made a laddu weighing 7,885 kg for Sree Navataram Youth, who created a pandal at Gajuwaka to house a 79-foot Ganesha idol, which is one among the biggest idols in the State.

The first entry into the Guinness Book happened in 2011, when they made a laddu weighing 5,570 kg for Suvarnabhoomi at MVP Colony, Visakhapatnam. This was followed by a 6,559-kg laddu at Pushkar Ghat in Rajahmundry in 2012 and a 7,132-kg one again at Pushkar Ghat in 2013.

This year’s laddu cost about Rs. 14 lakh and the container cost an additional Rs. 1.2 lakh. The cost will be equally shared by the maker and the organisers.

Talking about the making, Mr. Venkateswara Rao said that it took 16 persons to work non-stop for 8 hours to make it and the sweet contains 2,400 kg of sugar, about 2,200 kg of dal flour (channa dal powder), ghee 1,800 kg, cashew 700 kg, groundnuts 300 kg, cardamom 40 kg and turmeric 20 kg.

Prior to 2011, the record of the largest laddu was 551 kg and was held by a Hindu temple in Britain. “This record inspired us to create a new record,” said Mr. Venkateswara Rao.

According to the secretary of Sree Navataram Youth, Muralikrishna, while the idol will be kept for 21 days, the laddu will be kept for 11 days and then distributed as prasadam to the visiting devotees.
