The invention of calculations and progressions by the ancient mathematician Bhaskaracharya, under different heads such as Lilavati, Bijaganita and Grahaganita belongs to the 12 century. His significant contributions towards the mathematical world continue to leave a tremendous impact in the numerical field even today, retired Professor at Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Mumbai Sudhakar C. Agarkar has said.
In line with the ‘World Maths Day’ celebrations held at Sri Prakash Vidyaniketan on Monday, the Professor spoke on squaring of numbers and other simple techniques discovered by Bhaskara II through a digital presentation. “Bhaskaracharya’s works in the field of mathematics aimed at providing solutions to our day-to-day life. His simple way of calculating basic multiplication and square roots help people connect with the subject in an easy format,” Prof. Agarkar said.
To mark the ninth birth centenary celebrations of Bhaskara II along with the 127 birth anniversary of the mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan Iyengar, Madanlal Baldevraj Ghai, a retired professor from Punjab, told the students to draw inspiration from the renowned mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. “His power of calculation and invention of theorems were remarkable. Despite his poor economic background, the mathematician was able to raise the bar in the numerical domain. The present generation should try to inculcate his positive attitude and attempt to cross boundaries gliding through the challenges of life,” said Mr. Ghai.
As part of the World Maths Day, students from Classes VI to X exhibited origami crafts. From flowers to home decors to fruits and dragons, participants brought their creativity to the fore at the venue.
