Visual disturbances can be symptoms of other conditions, including neurological disorders, muscular disorders, vascular disease, cancers or trauma, said noted neuro-ophthalmologist Swaraj Bose.

Delivering a guest lecture on ‘The eye and the brain’, organized by GITAM Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (GIMS), here on Wednesday, Dr. Bose noted that visual disturbances were often associated with neurological disorders such as double vision, reduced visual field and acuity, total loss of vision or a swollen optic disc.

Dr. Bose, an associate professor and director of neuro-ophthalmology and orbital surgery at CEDARS Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said that only 260 neuro-opthalmologists were treating these problems in the entire world.

He called for greater coordination between the doctors, who are treating eye and neurology, for better understanding of eye problems.
