Stressing the need for creating awareness against the practice of dowry, Additional Joint Collector B. Rama Rao on Friday said that the change should begin at the grassroots level.
Flagging off an anti-dowry rally taken out by the anganwadi workers and employees of welfare departments to mark the Anti-Dowry Day, Mr. Rama Rao said that the Act promulgated by the government in 1961 prohibited the practice of dowry. Project director of the Women and Child Welfare Department S. Vidyavathi and other officials were present.
Attitudinal change
In another programme organised by the Mandal Legal Services Authority at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Law, district third additional judge Ch. K. Durga Rao observed that it was unfair on the part of the society to continue the practice of dowry even after providing equal share in property to women.
He said that change in the mindset of younger generations was the need of the hour to stop the practice of dowry. College Principal P.V. Trinadh and others were present.
