As part of World No Tobacco Day campaign, The Hindu and Mahatma Gandhi Cancer Hospital & Research Institute (MGCHRI) will jointly organise a health awareness programme on Tuesday for the benefit of employees of the Naval Dockyard.
During a panel discussion to be conducted on the occasion, effective measures to reduce tobacco consumption and cancer will be highlighted. Tobacco use is the second largest cause of death and on an average one among 10 adults die.
The programme will commence at 2.30 p.m. at Meghadri Auditorium.
Surgical oncologist and managing director of MGCHRI V. Murali Krishna, radiation oncologist K.C. Patro, Admiral Superintendent G.S. Pabby and Surgeon Captain Patnaik of Naval Dockyard will attend.
Dr. Murali Krishna said on Monday there were more than 4,000 chemicals in tobacco, of which at least 250 were known to be harmful and over 50 cause cancer.
The programme, he said, would provide an opportunity to highlight specific tobacco control messages and to promote adherence to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
MGCHRI, set up in 2005, has started a trust to expand and strive to provide further growth for all types of cancer treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and symptom management besides creating awareness on preventive care.
