Teachers of Andhra University, who are in the protest mode since Thursday as part of the State-wide agitation by teachers of State Government universities demanding payment of pay arrears, forced the postponement of a meeting of Joint Boards of Studies of the university and external members at the TLN Sabha Hall on the campus on Friday.
The teachers under the banner of Andhra University Teachers Association went in a procession from the Central Administrative Office after preventing the administrative staff from entering the building, and entered the TLN Sabha Hall. Vice-Chancellor in-charge P. George Victor asked the president M. Purnachandra Rao and secretary K. John to address the members and later postponed the meeting as many of the members of Joint Boards of Studies came out with the agitating teachers.
The Andhra University Teachers Association wanted the Principals, Deans, Wardens and Directors of different schools and centres of AU to resign from their posts if the government failed concede teachers’ demands by August 21.
The Affiliated College Teachers’ Association extended its support to the striking teachers in AP universities.
The association is also planning to launch an agitation soon with demands like raising the age of superannuation to 60 years on par with university teachers, release of UGC pay fixation arrears, issue of health cards to employees of aided colleges and regularisation of part-time lecturers working against sanctioned posts, its general secretary G. Mallikarjuna Rao said.
The non-teaching staff unions, hostel workers unions, teaching associates association and retired teachers association expressed their solidarity with university teachers.
