Some miscreants reportedly attempted to kidnap a newborn baby from the King George Hospital (KGH) in Visakhapatnam on Friday.

K. Lakshmi of Sivalingapuram village of S. Kota mandal in Vizianagaram district was admitted to the Labour Ward of KGH. She delivered a baby boy on September 13.

Lakshmi was shifted to the Gynaecology Ward and the baby to the Intensive Paediatric Care Unit (IPCU), as they developed some complications. Her husband Subba Rao, a daily wage earner, was attending on Lakshmi and her mother Kannamma was attending on the baby.

In the early hours of Friday, the miscreants reportedly entered the IPCU and diverted the attention of Kannamma. Women members among the miscreants reportedly snatched the baby and tried to sneak out of the ward. The duty doctor and staff nurse caught the women while they were trying to flee along with the baby.

KGH Superintendent M. Madhusudhan Babu said CC cameras would be installed at the IPCU to check the movement of strangers and a register would be maintained for visitors.
