Academies for archery, cycling and rifle shooting will be launched by the end of August in the district as a part of the government’s proposal to set up sports academies all over the State.
District Sports Development Officer June Rodrigues Gallyott said here on Friday district-level selections would be held on July 16 and 17. Boys and girls between 15 and 18 years are eligible.
While the archery and rifle shooting selections will be held on July 17 at Samskruti Global School at Parawada, cycling selections will take place on July 16 at the Aqua Sports Complex on the Beach Road here.
The district committee will be headed by the Collector and comprises District Sports Association secretary, prominent sportsmen, senior coach and DSDO.
The selections at State-level will be organised by Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh at Nagarjuna University in Guntur by the month-end. Ms. Gallyott said 20 players will be inducted in each academy.
Day boarder centres
As a part of the efforts to promote sports in rural and urban areas, she said day-boarder coaching centres would be launched in football, hockey, basketball, kabaddi, weightlifting, among others. Sports material, playing kit and nutrition supplements will be given to them.
The day boarder centres are proposed at Narsipatnam (boxing for boys), Elamanchili (hockey), Makavaripalem (football girls), Ms Gallyot said.
She said focus would be on promoting archery in Agency areas and as part of it a day border centre is proposed at Paderu and another centre would be set up at Araku for women boxing. At the college level advanced level day boarder centres are proposed.
The centres may be located at Bullayya College which has good infrastructure and also BVK College. Training at these centres will be monitored by DSA coaches and DSDO. Coaching at day boarders centres in rural areas will be montored by senior national players, she said.
District Olympic Association secretary M V Manikyalu, football coach Subba Rao and weightlifting coach Jhansilakshmi participated.
