A constable, V.Venkateswara Rao, displayed bravery in apprehending an armed dacoit at Bhimavaram in West Godavari district in the late hours of Sunday. Even as the miscreant opened fire at him with a country-made firearm, the constable reportedly chased and nabbed him with support from the locals. The constable and the general public, however, escaped unhurt.

The miscreant snatched a gold chain from a Vijayawada-based senior citizen Viswamsetti Kanakadurga, who came to Bhimavaram to visit Mavullamma temple, and tried to flee. When the woman raised an alarm, the constable, who also came to the temple with his family members, began the chase.

According to Superintendent of Police K. Raghuram Reddy, three persons from Rajasthan were suspected to have been involved in the aborted dacoity. They reportedly came to Bhimavaram sometime back to commit offences in the guise of doing some odd jobs. A couple of firearms were recovered from the scene of offence.

The SP appreciated the constable’s brave action and said that the police were on the lookout for all the gang members. The police would also inquire into the sources from where the gangsters procured the firearms. The Bhimavaram town police are investigating the case.
