: It is not enough to dole out antibiotics to anthrax patients, the government has to ensure they get nutritious food, former Speaker of AP Legislative Assembly Nadendla Manohar has observed.

Speaking after interacting with anthrax patients from Vennelakota, Goyigunta, Marripalem and Veerlamamidi villages at Vennelkota village in G. Madugula mandal on Wednesday, the former Speaker said it was unfortunate that the government has washed its hands off with limited interventions. Even the ASHA workers were not aware of what has to be done. “The patients are being given strong antibiotics and they need nutritious food to recover from the disease,” he said.

Anthrax is not a commonly occurring disease and the government should have turned it into an opportunity to increase its interventions and give confidence to the tribal people that they are not ignored.

The Ministers should have visited the affected villages to assure the people of their best intentions.

Slams officials for

‘spreading rumours’

Girijans are the heritage of entire humanity and it is not right to play politics on issues concerning them, Mr. Manohar said.

He faulted the officials for spreading a canard that the patients had left the KGH for attending the Moda Kondamma festival while the patients had clearly said that they left KGH because they were not happy with the treatment and the doctors did not attend on them.

The patients told the former Speaker that they had to pay for their meals and it was unbearably hot in the ward.

Former Tribal Welfare Minister P. Balaraju and local Congress activists accompanied him.
