Anganwadi workers and helpers staged a protest here on Friday under the aegis of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) against non-implementation of the hike in their wages. Though the increment was decided in April 2011, it was not implemented till date, they alleged.
Addressing the workers at the Collectorate, CITU district general secretary S. Ramesh asked the government to release the arrears that were due to anganwadi workers.
Later, speaking to newsmen, Anganwadi workers’ union general secretary G. Kumari said the work pressure got multiplied as one worker has to take care of two to three centres.
Vacancies
She demanded that the vacancies at anganwadi centres be filled at the earliest. She decried the concept of privatisation of ICDS as Balwadi Centres (run by private organisation) were coming up in the same areas where anganwadi centres were located. The union members decided to intensify the agitation if the government failed to respond positively .
