Delay in execution of various works due to pro and anti-Telangana agitations followed by the model code of conduct for elections, saw Andhra Medical College being directed to restrict its intake for the ensuing academic year to 150, instead of 200 which it was allowed since the academic year 2012-13.
The college was informed a few days ago by the Medical Council of India (MCI) to peg its intake at 150. This was because the colleges failed to equip themselves with the infrastructure needed for increased strength.
In the case of AMC it was the delay in execution of civil works by the AP Medical Infrastructure Development Corporation due to agitations, election code and formation of new governments though Rs. 9 crore is lying with it to take up construction of the buildings and to provide other facilities for the college, its Principal S.V. Kumar told The Hindu .
However, he was confident that AMC would get back the 50 seats after MCI was convinced that the college could not make the required facilities ready due to the reasons beyond its control, or for that matter the executing agency APMIDC. MCI inspection
MCI team during its inspection wanted five galleries with a capacity of 240 students each, while AMC has six galleries each with 200 capacity. Three more with capacity of 500 each are required, while the college has one with a capacity of 300. Had not the agitations and election code come in the way, work on expansion of the existing galleries and providing other facilities would have started and completed at least halfway.
