Human Rights Activist Swami Agnivesh on Saturday said he would submit a representation to the Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh for scrapping the proposed power project in Sompeta as it would lead environmental problems in and around the town.
While addressing a public gathering on the eve of completing 365 days of relay hunger strike opposing the power project, He said it was responsibility of the government to take the prior consent from locals for establishing such projects.
“Destruction is allowed in thickly populated areas in the name of development. We will not keep quiet if the government is keen on the power project despite killing of innocent people in police firing. We will meet Prime Minister very soon apart from urging Minister for Environment and Forest Jairam Ramesh not to give permission for the construction power project in Sompeta,” said Mr.Agnivesh.
“The fight against the plant will continue till the government scraps GO No.1107 which enabled Nagarjuna Construction Company to get 1000 acres of land at throwaway price,” he added.
Paryavarana Parirakshana Sangham leaders Y.Krishna Murthy, Beena Dhelli Rao, Human Rights Forum leader VS Krishna, Sandhya of Progressive Women Organisation have also vowed to continue the fight against the government.
They alleged that Roads and Buildings Minister Dharmana Prasada Rao was responsible for the killing of innocent people in the firing. A rally was also organized in Sompeta town.
Earlier, Swami Agnivesh and other activists visited Vadditandra of Santabommali mandal. He assured that he would extend support to the agitation against the establishment of power plant in Kakarapalli. He said no project should come up at the cost of environment.
