Wood carved panel depicting the evil of alcohol addiction created by city-based artist B. Sanyasi Rao has been selected for State-level award in Wood Carving Craft for 2013 by the Andhra Pradesh State Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited.

A certificate and a cash prize of Rs. 10,000 was given away to Mr. Sanyasi Rao by APSHDCL Managing Director Shailaja Ramaiyer at a programme organised at Lepakshi office in Hyderabad recently.

The APSHDCL sponsored the awards for the years 2012 and 2013, and 10 craft workers were selected for each year.

Mr. Sanyasi Rao was the only craftsman from the district at the awards function.

“It was an exhilarating experience. I was participating for the first time in any awards competition and could not believe that I was selected,” Mr. Sanyasi Rao told The Hindu .

“The function was so grand, all the award winners had brought their families along and it was a great feeling to be among so many award winning crafts persons,” he added.

Masterpiece

The award winning 28” x 23” panel shows a drunken master of the household with his mother at his feet imploring him to kick the evil habit even as his wife suckles a baby and another daughter cowers in a corner.

Mr. Sanyasi Rao’s work was featured in these columns on April 8, 2014.

The organisers advised Mr. Sanyasi Rao to participate in the national-level competition.

Enthused by the reception to his work, Mr. Sanyasi Rao is contemplating training others in wood carving.
