The destiny of three-year-old orphan and physically-challenged Sandeep took a glorious turn last week when a U.S.-based couple adopted him. In a humanitarian gesture, citizens of Italy, France, Singapore and other countries adopted 11 children from Krishna district since 2016.
Seven of the children were girls brought up by the State-run Sishu Gruhas.
“We wanted to give a happy home to a child though we have been blessed with two babies,” Joseph Rely and his wife Elizabeth told The Hindu . The couple from the U.S. collected Mr. Sandeep last week from Collector B. Lakshikantam here.
The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development’s Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA), a statutory body that deals with the adoption of orphan, abandoned and surrendered children, came as a boon also in the case of Master Cory and baby Cristal (belonging to the same family) who were adopted by a French couple Frederic Stephane Michel Heulin and Jacqueline Cuche in 2017.
By early December, nine adopted children are leading the promised life: better access to health, education and care.
“The CARA has given No Objection Certificate to U.S. and Italy-based couples to adopt Ms. Pravallika and Ms. Lasya respectively. The process of obtaining local court consent and handing over the babies to the adopting couples is expected to be completed soon,” District Women and Child Welfare Department Project Director K. Krishna Kumari said.
Krishna District Judge Y. Lakshmana Rao opined that the initiative of legal adoption through the CARA had come as a ray of hope for the children.
