A grave issue

December 31, 2014 12:10 am | Updated 12:10 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

A burial ground adjacent to an apartment building at Venkojipalem haunts residents in more ways than one.

There are 85 apartments in the complex and those staying here have to wake up either to the scenes of open defecation or funeral rites being performed on the premises.

“We need to shut our doors and windows. At times, we find it difficult to step out of the apartment and endure the inconvenience,” says C. Sai Kumar, one of the residents.

Despite repeated complaints, the colony residents say that officials concerned and MLAs seem to pay scant attention to the issue. Moreover, the slum-dwellers residing in the neighbourhood celebrate jatara and other occasions by setting up a makeshift stage and blocking the road.

“Apart from the traffic bottleneck that we need to put up with during such occasions, noise pollution is another factor. Elderly people like me end up enduring the inconvenience quietly,” says P. Nirmala, a homemaker, living in the colony.

In addition, some of the slum-dwellers park their vehicles haphazardly on the road. And a couple of them have been parked for months-long, say the residents.
