The move by the workers of Coromandel Fertlizers to contribute a part of their earnings in the service of less privileged members of society earned rich accolades from Chairman Visakhapatnam Port Trust M.T. Krishna Babu.

Mr. Krishna Babu, who was chief guest at a function organised to give away tricycles to physically challenged, sewing machines to the Visakha District Association of the Deaf and building material to an orphanage, said he was inspired by the move and would discuss with the unions in the port to take up similar activities. The 500 strong workers union – Coromandel Fertilizers Employees Union – started the trade union social responsibility (TUSR) initiative last year and each member contributes Rs. 20 per month and the management, which appreciated the effort, decided to contribute a matching amount.

The office-bearers of the union went around identifying persons who were really in need and the amount was apportioned among them, honorary president of the trade union Ch Narsing Rao explained.

The initiative was a feather in the cap for the Coromandel Fertilizers and the Murugappa Group, company General Manager M. Kumaresan said and urged the workers to continue with it. The company would be soon setting up an out patient consultation block to serve the people of the area and the workers are also helping in identifying the location, he added. Secretary of the union S.M. Basha and workers were present.
