A skill enhancement programme was conducted for girl students of classes 8th and 9th at Sri Chaitanya High School at Rednam Gardens here on Friday as part of the programme to train girls in martial arts being introduced from the academic year 2016-17. The martial arts training as a means of self-defence for girl students was being introduced on an experimental basis for the first time in the State in Visakhapatnam, Guntur and Chittoor districts. A total of 23,281 girls from 313 schools (Government, ZP, Adarsh Schools and KGBV schools) in Visakhapatnam district were selected for the training programme.
The selected girls would be trained by experts from the Bandi Institute of Martial Arts (B.I.M.A.), which has entered into an agreement with the State government in this regard. Deputy Education Officer C.V. Renuka, Adarsh Schools consultant from Amaravathi MAH Subrahmanyam and District Olympic Association president Harshavardhan were among those who participated in the programme.
The training programme would be given in the respective schools for two hours a week for the next three months from Feb 6.
District Education Officer M. Venkata Krishna Reddy called upon the head masters of various schools to ensure successful implementation of the martial arts training programme.
