Demonetisation threw the country into a financial crisis and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has failed to convince people about the change it has brought about, Congress coordinator for Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka MLC H.M. Revanna has said.

The Prime Minister in his speech announced relaxations which could have been part of the budget, but did not touch the key aspects, he told reporters here on Monday.

Mr. Modi promised ‘achhee din’ after 50 days, but did not reveal how much black money was unearthed and how corruption was brought down, he said.

He alleged that States like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, ruled by non-BJP parties, were targeted by government agencies in raids against black money. “Mumbai is notorious for ‘hawala’ transactions. Other states like Gujarat and Rajasthan are spared. Is there no black money there?” he asked.

Mr. Revanna, coordinator for demonetisation-related issues for the State, said the government could not answer questions on what were the consultations carried out before demonetisation.

The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, who claimed part of the credit for demonetisation, should answer why change had not come. Small businessmen and farmers were badly affected but there was no relief to them, he pointed out.

Dharna on Jan. 7

The former Karnataka Minister said Congressmen stage a dharna at the Collectorates in Andhra Pradesh on January 7 demanding relief to various sections from the after-effects of demonetisation and Mahila and Youth Congress and BC cell would hold another dharna at the same venue on January 9.

Former government whip and party State general secretary Dronamraju Srinivas, City congress president Behera Bhaskara Rao, general secretary Yellapu Raghuram and Mahila Congress president Pedada Ramana Kumari were present.
