Central Vigilance Commissioner K.V. Chowdary on Saturday administered a pledge to school and college students to play an active role in fighting against corruption.

At a meeting organised by Visakhapatnam Port Trust and Dredging Corporation of India in connection with distribution of artificial limbs to differently abled children of Gurudeva Charitable Trust, he underlined the need for preventive vigilance and asked the students to become crusaders against corruption.

“We gave Rs. 27.5 lakh for construction of a shelter to the NGO,” VPT Chairman M.T. Krishna Babu said.

Artificial limbs were presented to persons with disability by DCI and Gurudeva Charitable Trust at a cost of Rs.13.5 lakh. A cultural programme presented by children, some of them differently challenged floored the gathering at the Port Kalavani Indoor Stadium. The skits and other events highlighting corruption as a menace in society were very impressive, Mr. Chowdary later said.

In his address, he asked the students to understand the need to uphold democratic values and advised them to read preamble, fundamental rights, directive principles of State policy and fundamental duties as enshrined in the Constitution.

Stating that bribery alone was not a corrupt practice, he explained that favouritism, restricting the opportunity to a few of choice out of turn and violation of rules and ignoring guidelines also tantamount to corruption and punishable under various sections of law.

H said the Central Vigilance Commission was on a mission to create awareness on preventive vigilance so that the citizens could take an active part in weeding out corruption in every sphere of life.

Joint Collector G. Srijana, VPT Deputy Chairman P.L. Haranadh, DCI Chairman and Managing Director Rajesh Tripathi, VPT and DCI Chief Vigilance Officer V.V.S. Srinivas and others were present.
