58 street children rescued in Vizag

Following an initiative by the police, 58 street children were rescued in the city and 20 of them sent back to their parents on Saturday after counselling and the remaining to juvenile homes at various places.

The children were produced before the District Child Welfare Committee here. Chairperson S. Balaraju and members Ramakrishna Rao, L.V. Ramani and Md. Hussain discussed various options for their rehabilitation. DCP P. Viswa Prasad and CI Sk. Hussain were present.

The initiative was taken to rescue and rehabilitate street children on a directive by the Director-General of Police V. Dinesh Reddy. Among the rescued children, the boys were sent to Government Home for Boys at China Gadili and girls to the Juvenile Home at Sagarnagar. Mr. Balaraju said places where children were being forced to beg had been identified to continue the campaign to rescue and rehabilitate them.
