Youth of Gajuwaka, mostly students and businessmen, wants to scale new heights, albeit in a different way. This time they want the Ganesha idol installed by them on Old Gajuwaka Exhibition Grounds the tallest in the State.

Under the aegis of Sampath Vinayak Youth, a voluntary outfit, Rs.2.5 lakhs has been raised to engage artistes from Medinapore of West Bengal to make a 54-foot-high idol. Five artistes have been camping here for past two weeks and they are now working without rest to complete the giant task in next four days.

“We want that people should visit our pandal instead of going to Hyderabad to see the tallest idol of the State,” says Mulli Siva, organising secretary of Sampath Vinayak Youth. “We got the idea to install such a huge idol after seeing the pandal put up at NAD by Vizag Defence Academy – which was the tallest idol in the city last year,” he told The Hindu on Monday.

Clay and dry grass was used for the idol. Now painting work is pending. The organisers say use of chemicals for the idol has been made minimal. One of the artistes discloses that this is their most difficult task.

They had so far built an idol of Durgadevi with a height of 40 feet.
