4 jailed for manufacturingsubstandard drug

Second Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Shammi Parvana Sultana Begum sentenced four persons, including Chairman and Managing Director of Opus Life Sciences Ltd, to one-year rigorous imprisonment and also slapped a fine of ₹ 25,000 each for the manufacture and distribution of the substandard drug, here on Friday.

PENZ-40 tablets manufactured by Opus Life Sciences Ltd, Raipur village, Uttarakhand were was declared as “Not of Standard Quality (NSQ) by the then Assistant Director (Drugs Control Administration, Visakhapatnam) Ravi Uday Bhaskar, Government Analyst, Drugs Control Laboratory, Hyderabad, as the sample failed to comply the test for disintegrations in 2019.

Assistant Public Prosecutor Sudharani, who argued the case, said the firm has violated Section 18(a) (i) of Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, punishable under section 27 (d) of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
