The 57 Railway Week celebrations were conducted at Waltair Division of East Coast Railway on Monday.
The first train in India was hauled by three locomotives Sind, Sultan, and Sahibhad with 400 guests from Bombay to Thane on April 16, 1853. Railway Week celebrations are organised to commemorate the occasion. There was no looking back for the Indian Railways ever since. With its network spreading over the length and breadth of the country, the Railways serve millions of people, both rich and poor, every day.
Railway Week is celebrated all over Indian Railways from April 10 to 16, every year. This is the week when the Railways actually celebrate those uncrowned heroes, who have put in their heart and soul to make the wheels of great Indian Railways move.
Divisional Railway Manager N. Kashinath participated as chief guest and Latha Kashinath, president, East Coast Railway Women's Welfare Organisation, Waltair Division, lit the customary lamp.
As many as 267 staff of 15 departments working in Waltair Division - spread over AP, Odisha, and Chattisgarh – were conferred merit certificates and cash awards, amounting to Rs.1, 77,000 by the DRM.
DRM and Additional DRM C. Madhusudhana Rao congratulated the awardees, as also the leaders of the recognised trade unions, who spoke on this occasion.
Besides 50 staff of Waltair Division, who were honoured by the General Manager, East Coast Railway, during his annual inspection in Waltair Division, were presented cash awards worth Rs.1,25,500 for their sincerity and hard work.
This apart, 57 employees of Waltair Division were also given efficiency badges, merit certificates, and cash awards for meritorious performance, dedication, and devotion to duty during Railway Week celebrations organised at the General Manager's level at Bhubaneswar on April 13, 2012.
Waltair Division also bagged efficiency shields in six disciplines among the Divisions of East Coast Railway, for outstanding contribution to the Railways. Senior Divisional Personnel Officer P. Narayana Rao proposed a vote of thanks. The programme ended with a scintillating performance by the Divisional Cultural Association of Waltair Division.
