140 kg of ganja seized, youth arrested

The rural police recovered around 140 kgs of dry ganja and arrested a youth who was involved in transporting the contraband weed from the interior parts of the Agency areas of Visakhapatnam district to other states, here at Butchampeta village of Rolugunta mandal here on Friday.

The arrested was identified as Simbodi Venkata Ramana (26), a resident of Ravikamatham mandal in Visakhapatnam Agency.

Rolugunta Sub-inspector D. Govinda Rao said Venkata Ramana procured the ganja from the interior villages of G. Madugula mandal and initially shifted it to Butchampeta mandal and neatly packed the weed in seven bags of 20 kgs each. Storing the ganja in the forest area, Venkata Ramana was waiting for a friend, who supposed to bring a vehicle to transport it to Tamil Nadu.

Police on reliable information, nabbed Venkata Ramana, while his friend escaped. The SI said he had taken a contract from someone for supply of ganja, and he is unaware of the kingpins.

Cash of Rs. 8,000 was also seized from the accused. Cases have been booked under various sections of NDPS Act and the smuggler was produced before the court on Friday.
