The YSRC is mulling fielding a candidate from Kapu or Arya Vysya community as its Mayoral candidate in the forthcoming civic polls to the Guntur Municipal Corporation.

Party leaders have been told to scout for young and resourceful candidates from the two communities.

The YSRC is keen on consolidating its hold among minorities, Dalits and Dalit Christians while trying to break new ground by fielding candidates from Kapu and Arya Vysya communities. The party wrested the Guntur East Assembly segment, but it lost Guntur West by a huge majority.

YSRC president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, who visited the residence of party spokesperson Ambati Rambabu on Monday, told senior leaders to plan the strategies for launching popular agitations. Mr. Reddy said the TDP government had become unpopular among the weaker sections owing to the “delay” in disbursal of pensions and the “failure” to implement anti-poor policies.

“The Chief Minister has reneged on all poll promises, including unconditional loan waiver of crop loans and SHG loans,” he added.

Earlier, Mr. Reddy drove from Gannavaram airport to the residence of Mr. Rambabu before heading to Ongole.

A host of YSRC leaders, including party general secretary Lavu Krishnadevarayalu, district president Marri Rajasekhar, Lella Appireddy, MLAs Kona Raghupati, Sk. Mustafa, G. Srinivasa Reddy and Alla Ramakrishna Reddy, called on Mr. Reddy.
