Hospital staff, doctors try to hush up case; fail to inform police
A 27-year-old youth, an in-patient of the Government Hospital, here, on Friday jumped from the roof of the hospital and is battling for life as he sustained severe injuries.
According to the hospital case sheet (No.10585), Kolluri Ajay Kumar of Edepalli, a motorcycle mechanic, was admitted to the hospital in the early hours for relief from pain in the abdomen, but absconded from the male medical ward within half-an hour.
The patient's mother, Lakshmi, said that her son had taken the extreme step due to failure of his marriage proposal talks with a local girl recently.
The staff nurse on duty suspected that Ajay Kumar had gained entry to the roof of the two-floor hospital through the children's ward and tried to commit suicide by jumping.
Lying in pool of blood
The staff found him absconding from the ward at 3.40 a.m. Relatives of the patient noticed him lying in a pool of blood in the backyard of the hospital building.
He was crying for help and according to the medial case sheet his left wrist and right knee joints were fractured. The sheet also confirms that he received injuries but did not say where and how he received them.
There was no security guard on duty at the male medical ward, from where the patient absconded, between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m.
In a bid to hush up the medico-legal case, the hospital authorities referred the patient to the orthopaedics ward without informing the police or the out post at the hospital. Government Hospital, Machilipatnam RMO T. Vinaya Kumar told The Hindu that the patient absconded from the ward and sustained injuries.
The hospital authorities are not responsible for the incident as he had absconded. He also confirmed that promising security to in-patients is not the responsibility of the hospital administration. According to personnel at the police out post, no case was registered.
