The college students under the aegis of Youth Against Corruption (YAC) launched a 72-hour ‘maha dharna', a massive demonstration, here on Wednesday.
At Rammohan Roy Library in the city, the YAC launched the demonstration as part of nation-wide three-day protest demanding a strong anti-corruption law like Jan Lokpal. Students and youth from various districts like Nellore, Prakasam, Visakhapatnam and Krishna districts participated in the dharna. About 100 students from Nalanda Degree College, Satavahana, and Sarada Colleges took part in the protest. Poura Samaja Vedika, Indian Medical Association, Bar Association, Swabhiman Trust and others expressed their solidarity.
Earlier, they took out a rally from the dharna camp to Vivekananda statue near Ragahvaiah Park raising slogans –Vande Mataram—fight against corruption.
The YAC leaders said that they were organising 200 Janajagaran yatras against the corruption and black money throughout India. Through this yatra, the YAC proposes to reach 15 lakh to 20 lakh youth and try to persuade them to join hands in fighting against the corruption, they said. The YAC was in favour of an effective Lokpal Bill. But, it would be wrong to expect transparency, honesty from a completely corrupt UPA Government, they opined.
“For instance, the UPA Government instead of taking measures to root out corruption was shielding ministers like P. Chdimbaram who was equally guilty in the 2G scam.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should resign his post for remaining mute spectator to corruption”, they said.
The YAC East Andhra Pradesh convener Ganta Venkat and others were present.
