Women should be given equal opportunities, says Speaker

Legislative Assembly Speaker Kodela Sivaprasada Rao has underscored the need for giving equal opportunities to women in all fields to showcase their ability.

Given their composure and desire to succeed, they can achieve any task in a limited time. Women are travelling to space and making their presence felt in all fields, but it is very unfortunate that some people still consider birth of a female child as a burden, he said.

Addressing at the diamond jubilee celebrations of Montessori Education Institution, Dr. Rao said it was an achievement for the college management, especially Ms. V. Koteswaramma, director, secretary and correspondent of the Institution, for running the society successfully all these years.

He said post bifurcation the State was facing many challenges and irrespective of their gender, men and women should strive hard for development.

As desired by Ms. Koteswaramma, all efforts would be made to get deemed university status for the institution, he said.

Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Y.S. Chowdary, who was guest of honour, said farmers should make better use of technology as it would help in reaping good profits.

Mr. Chowdary, who is an alumnus of the institution, assured that he would do his best to get deemed university status for the institution. Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas said more than 85 per cent of seats in the medical stream and 50 per cent in the engineering streams were taken by women and this was a good sign.

Earlier, submitting a report about the institution, Ms. V. Koteswaramma said the despite fulfilling the required formalities, including deposit of Rs.7.5. crore and availability of sufficient land, the government was yet to sanction deemed university status. Once the institution was conferred with deemed university status, it would help in offering more courses for the students and said from next July, a new course M.A. (Dance) would be offered.

Vijayawada Central MLA Bonda Umamaheswara Rao presented the message of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Irrigation Minister D. Umamaheswara Rao, Vijayawada MP Kesineni Srinivas, Eluru MP Maganti Venkateswara Rao and others spoke on the occasion.
