Women seek prohibition on liquor

Blaming addiction to liquor for the increasing crimes against women, members of the Vasavya Mahila Mandali on Monday sought prohibition on alcohol.

At a meeting on ‘Women problems – solutions’ here, girl students, NGO representatives, women employees of bank , APSRTC, MEPMA, Women Development and Child Welfare and other departments appealed discussed several issues pertaining to gender equality and women rights.

They appealed to people to give equal opportunities to both their sons and daughters, saying that the move would act as a deterrent against the male domination in the society.

A.P. Women Commission Chairperson Tripurana Venkataratnam, the chief guest of the programme, promised to bring pressure on the government for providing toilets and rest rooms for women in government departments.

Speaking on the ill-effect of child marriage, ICDS supervisor G. Prasanthi gave details about the steps taken by the Women Development and Child Welfare officials such as counselling sessions for the parents to prevent the ‘social evil’. An NGO Samaikya Parishat president Mary opined that ban on liquor would prevent attacks on women.

Corporation Bank Senior Manager Santhi observed that uncontrolled social media and cell phones were polluting young minds.

Former Member of Parliament Chennu pati Vidya said the issues raised by women would be taken to the government’s notice.
