Warm welcome accorded to cyclists

Members of Active Bicyclers Association, who were on a cycle rally from Jammu to New Delhi, were accorded a warm welcome on Friday on their successful return.

As many as 39 cyclists from the association and Acharya Nagarjuna University took part in the rally aimed at promoting good health and protecting the environment. The rally is sponsored by University Grants Commission.

“This is the final leg our yatra that was aimed to cover from Kanyakumari to Kashmir in a phased manner. First we covered Vijayawada-Delhi route and later covered Vijayawada-Kanyakumari. We (cyclists) pedalled from Vijayawada to Bangalore, Goa in August and now we have successfully covered the distance from Jammu and Delhi in two weeks,” said Satyanarayana, general secretary, Active Bicyclers Association.

He said the rally waded through Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Chandigarh, Panipat and Sonipat before reaching New Delhi. “We met the Central Pollution Control Board member secretary and also UGC secretary who appreciated our effort promote good health and clean environment through cycling. We visited Rashtrapati Bhavan and but could not meet the Rashtrapati as she was away on a holiday”.

He said Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit appreciated the cause and asked the cyclists to continue their good work in spreading the message of good health to the younger generation.

Mr. Satyanarayana said the gurudwaras were helpful and allowed the cyclists to stay in the night. “The weather was not hostile and the winter was just setting in,” he added.
