The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation is contemplating writing a letter to Irrigation Department to remove the encroachments on the riverbed.
Municipal Commissioner G. Ravi Babu has directed the engineering wing officials to take up the matter with the Irrigation Department in view of the travails that the people would have to undergo every year after floodwater was discharged from Prakasam Barrage.
The VMC takes up rescue, relief, and rehabilitation measures to save the people from floods every year. Many houses inundate even if 2.50 lakh cusecs of water was discharged from the barrage and the people living in those vulnerable areas need to be relocated, he said.
It would be taken up in a phased manner. As of now, about 100 to 150 families were living in the most dangerous condition. The VMC would provide houses to all eligible people if they were ready to move out from there, he said, adding, the Irrigation Department would have to evacuate the people living on the riverbed.
Official visit
The Municipal Commissioner visited Ramalingeswara Nagar, Tarakarama Nagar, cement godown etc., areas here on Monday. On the occasion, he said the houses in danger zone need to be identified. Those houses need to be numbered and marked for easy identification to take up rescue operations.
He also asked the health officials to take up a household survey in the flood affected areas. Mr. Ravi Babu cautioned the people living near the river to drink boiled and cooled water in view of the recent flood.
The people living in Krishnalanka, Padmavathi Ghat, Ranigarithota, Ranadive Nagar, Tarakarama Nagar, Bhupesh Gupta Nagar, and those receive water supplies from Ramalingeswara Nagar 10 MGD plant, need to be vigilant, he said.
The Commissioner asked the officials to send the samples of water supplied to the people for testing at IPM laboratory until normalcy restored.
