The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation launched a special sanitation drive to make the city litter-free by August 15, at Mutyalampadu here on Saturday.
Vijayawada (Central) MLA Malladi Vishnu, who kicked-started the drive, said that the more than Rs. 700 crore had been spent on water supply, Under Ground Drainage (UGD), drains, and roads in the city. The State government needs to release Rs. 200 crore more to the corporation. If the funds were released, the city would progress further and more developmental works could be taken up, he said.
Municipal Commissioner Md. Abdul Azeem said that the streets speak volumes of city development to any outsider. “When I first toured various parts of the city, I understood the scenario of sanitation. Then I decided that bringing a change was my first duty,” he said. Vijayawada was ahead of others in 100 per cent door-to-door garbage collection. The special drive would continue up to August 14, and the city would be declared litter-free city on midnight of that day. The people were requested to cooperate with the Corporation in making the city clean, he said.
Former Deputy Mayor Samanthapudi Narasaraju, CMOH Dr. M. Satyanarayana Raju, City Planner S. Chakrapani, Executive Engineers Vijaybhaskar, Om Prakash, Horticulture AD Sujatha, AMOHs Dr. Ibal Hussain, Dr. Babu Srinivas, Dr. Z. Srinvasa Rao and others were present.
A rally was organised in Patamata at the NTR Circle. Vijayawada (East) MLA Yelamanchili Ravi, Residential Welfare Associations (RWAs) members and others took part in the rally stressing on the need to make city clean.
