VMC comes out with novel idea to promote cycling

The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) will set up ‘cycle centres' to encourage people to take to bicycle riding and, thereby, protect environment and lessen traffic in the city.

The corporation is also initiating steps to enlighten people on the utility of bicycle riding, which is an effective too to keep good health.

“People have been exhorted to cooperate with the VMC in checking burgeoning traffic and prevent pollution,” said Municipal Commissioner G. Ravi Babu.

The Commissioner participated in a bicycle ride along with students from the Indira Gandhi Stadium to Benz Circle on Friday. The VMC had arranged cycle tracks on either side of the road on BRTS, Eluru, and Bandar roads for the convenience of cyclists.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ravi Babu said as part of efforts to promote bicycle riding, it was decided to observe every Friday as Cycle Day. He sad only 30 per cent of people was using bicycles. The Commissioner said cycle tracks should not be used as parking lots.

The Commissioner directed the officials to arrange ‘cycle centres' in major areas. Interested persons can take bicycles by showing the ID proof and hand it over again after finishing their work, Mr. Ravi Babu said.

Officials of various wings of the corporation participated in the programme.
