A ninth standard student, D. Hemanth (14), of V.R. Siddhartha Public School, died when he fell into a stream of cold water in a valley at Pehalgam in Kashmir on Thursday.

The accident took place at around 1.30 p.m. when the boy was taking a horse ride. He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead (of cardiac arrest and hypothermia), said the school authorities.

A total of 250 students from classes eight, nine and ten went on a 15-day excursion to Kashmir on October 16 accompanied by School principal Col. Ramanaiah and some other teaching staff.

“Hemanth, son of D.V. Brahmananda Babu, was a resident of Vatlurivaari Street in One Town area in Vijayawada. We are making efforts to shift the body by air”, said school vice-principal Vani. The school authorities did not give clear details about the incident. The body is expected to arrive on Saturday morning,” the boy’s family members said.
