The Vijayawada Divisional Railway Manager (DRM)’s office building has applied for 4 Star and the Railway Hospital 5 Star ratings of Bureau of Energy Efficiency in the Ministry of Power, having saved 2.58 lakh units and 63,000 units of electricity in 2012-13.

For its achievement, the DRM office was chosen for Certificate of Merit towards the National Energy Conservation Award (NECA)-2013. It was received by Senior Divisional Electrical Engineer K. Nagendra Prasad in New Delhi on September 23.

Announcing this in a press conference here on Friday, DRM Pradeep Kumar said energy consumption of the DRM office building was 12.03 lakh units in 2011-12 and it came down to 9.45 lakh units in 2012-13. The savings amounted to Rs 17.30 lakh.

Installation of about 50 occupancy sensors which automatically switch off electrical appliances when officers leave their chambers, in the DRM office building and Railway Hospital and replacement of high power fans with 5 Star rated ones and 40 W tube lights with T5 28 W lights were significant energy conservation measures taken during the year. Solar light pipes installed in the Works branch brought down usage of electricity during daytimes.

Proposals for NECA for 2013-14 were submitted in respect of the Railway station which saved 1.87 lakh units and Railway Hospital and Diesel Loco Shed with savings of Rs 63,000 and 56,000 units respectively.

Additional DRM N.S.R. Prasad said NECA is given by Ministry of Power for loads exceeding 200 KW whereas Vijayawada Railway Division has 742 KW of load which was six per cent higher compared to that of the previous year. Consumption was lower by 21 per cent due to the conservation measures taken across the division which has one A-1 category station (Vijayawada), 13 stations in ‘A’ category, 12 in B, 14 in D, 77 in E and 44 in F categories.

Senior Divisional Managers Nagendra Prasad (electrical), N.V. Satyanarayana (commercial) and K. Satyanarayana (operations) were present.
