Stinking and muddy water is bieng supplied to residents of the RTC Workshop Road area in Vidyadharapuram here.

The residents have alleged that the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has been supplying contaminated water for the last five to six months with little concern for public health. Contaminated water is being supplied since many months, and complaints have failed to move the officials concerned, they allege.

Water smells foul and dust settles at the bottom of every container after a few minutes, say residents, showing glasses of water collected from a tap.

A large number of families are forced to depend on other sources for drinking water.

In the light of advent of monsoon, if effective steps are not taken immediately, people fear outbreak of water-borne diseases.

“A majority of population in this area is forced to drink this contaminated water or buy packaged drinking water,” the residents say.

Repair works

The problem has cropped up after the corporation took up some developmental works on this stretch of road. The residents of Narasimha Apartments and others lodged a complaint with the VMC that there is contamination of water.

Though some repair works have been taken up, it does not serve the purpose.

“Proper steps have to be taken to check water that is being supplied to people. But, the authorities are not serious in this regard,” the residents have alleged.

“Perhaps they would act only if the situation turns worse,” they feel.

“I have repeatedly taken up the matter with them, but no concrete action has been taken. All repairs are mere eye wash. The problem resurfaces the very next day,” says a resident.
