Every technology has a hidden agenda; the user must exercise prudence while using it, says V.V. Venkata Ramana, Senior Technical Director, National Informatics Centre, Hyderabad.

Addressing a seminar on “Googling for you” organised by the Lions Club International in the city on Sunday, Mr. Ramana said people must use “only how much is required”.

Dwelling at length on Google’s mission and philosophy, he said the mission was to organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful while as part of its philosophy, Google had found 10 things to be true: Focus on the user and all else will follow; It is best to do one thing really, really well; fast is better than slow; democracy on the web works; you don’t need to be at your desk to need an answer; you can make money without doing evil; there’s always more information out there; the need for information crosses all borders; you can be serious without a suit; that great just isn’t good enough.

He then went on to explain about the myriad options made available by the Google such as Google Docs, a free web-based word processing, spreadsheet and presentation programmes that allow one to create and edit documents from anywhere and collaborate with multiple people at the same time. Google Docs Sharing: Choose who can access your documents, share instantly, edit and present with others in real time, multiple people can view and make changes at the same time.

Features

Mr. Ramana listed out features like Blogger, Google Voice, Google Profile, Google Latitude and Google Chrome, a browser that combines a minimal design with sophisticated technology to make the web faster, safer, and easier.

He also spoke about Google products designed for mobile devices such as Maps, Gmail, SMS, YouTube, Calendar, News, Picasa Web Albums, Checkout and NOTE.

B.P. Srinivas, Director of WinMethods Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Hyderabad also spoke while district governor of the Club M. Venkateswara Rao and vice-district governor S.V.N. Nivruth Rao were also present.

District chairperson for Information Technology P. Satish presided over the seminar.
