Works on the Ramvarappadu flyover, which caved in a year ago, are likely to be resumed shortly as the State government has approved the report submitted by technical committee a couple of month ago.

The government also has asked the Vijayawada-Guntur-Tenali-Mangalagiri Urban Development Authority (VGTMUDA) authorities to speed up the process and complete the flyover works at the earliest. Subsequently, the UDA officials dashed a letter to RSV Constructions to commence the works.

The flyover which was under construction caved in at Nehru Nagar near Gunadala on December 9, 2013. Since then, the project has been in limbo. State bifurcation issue, general elections have also delayed the progress of the flyover.

Committee report

The government also washed of its hands by constituting an experts committee comprising Engineer in Chief (EnC) Public Health, Superintending Engineer (SE) Roads and Buildings (R&B), one Professor each from Regional Engineering College (REC) Warangal and Acharaya Nagarjuna University in February. The committee submitted report in September. In the next month, the authorities gave nod to the report, with a clean chit to the contractor, RSV Constructions, in the case, UDA sources say.

Toeing the line with the findings of IRMA and IIT Chennai, the expert panel felt that there was no fault on part of the contractor.

The agency did not use substandard material as alleged. The girders caved in owing to a problem that cropped up during its erection. There is no fault in designs or quality. The UDA and contractor should take adequate measures to ensure that it would not repeat in future, the panel said in its report. The flyover is expected to ease traffic congestion near Durga temple. At least 35 to 40 per cent of traffic coming form Hyderabad and bound to Visakhapatnam and Kolkatta can be diverted from Gollapudi without entering the core city area.
