A 24-year-old woman committed suicide by immolating herself following a tiff with her husband in a village under Gudlaveluru police station limits on Sunday night.

The incident came to light when she was admitted to the government hospital here on Monday morning. According to police, Ch. Amala Lakshmi of Dokiparru village resorted to the extreme step following a dispute with her husband, Ch. Nagababu, a farmer, over clearing their debts.

Nagababu had reportedly proposed to sell her jewellery to clear the debt of Rs.20,000. However, the couple had an argument before they went to bed on Sunday night and she attempted suicide. Mr. Nagababu stopped Lakshmi when she tried to pour kerosene and set herself ablaze.

However, he reportedly could not prevent her when she attempted suicide a second time, said Gudivada DSP D. Muralidhar. Mr. Nagababu

sustained burns on his hands when he tried to save her. She died in the early hours of Monday while undergoing treatment. Lakshmi’s parents who belong to Pedana lodged a complaint against Nagababu and his parents. Vijayawada Staff Reporter

Meanwhile, B. Nagaraji (28), wife of Rambabu, consumed some poison at her residence in Bhagat Singh Nagar here on Sunday and died while undergoing treatment in hospital. The couple was married for eight years ago and had no children. The reason for her suicide was not known.
