‘Happy Sunday’, which had been entertaining citizens since more than a year, witnessed a variety of events like drawing competition and limbo skating apart from the regular cultural programmes this Sunday near the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium and BRTS Road in the city.

Two municipal school teachers, M.V. Krishna Reddy of RCM UP School in Ranigari Thota and A.V.V. Prasad Babu of RCM School in Telaprolu, kick-started their 260-km cycle rally. The school teachers aim to sensitise people on environmental issues such as lack of sufficient rainfall during their cycle journey all the way to Giddaluru in Prakasam district.

Through the mission, the duo wants to convey the simple fact that an increasing number of trees and forest areas will lead to adequate rainfall. Commissioner G. Veerapandian and East MLA Gadde Rammohan Rao flagged off the cycle rally and congratulated the teachers on taking up such a mission in the interest of environment and farmers.

Cynosure of all eyes

The 10-year-old daredevil skater Gundupalli Devisri Prasad turned the cynosure of all eyes at the event as he did a trail of what would be a recording breaking feat in near future when he performs before the Guinness World Records team.

Prasad, a native of Tirupati is known for his special skill of limbo skating, holds records in Limca and other books of records. He is currently practising at the Ramakrishna Housing complex close to Acharya Nagarjuna University by rolling underneath cars and bars covering a length of 130 metres.

On the other hand, a drawing and painting competition was held at the stadium gallery and students from kindergarten to engineering took part.

The competitions were organised by Dream Children’s Art Academy and Rotary Club of Vijayawada. Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner Mr. Veerapandian said that the Happy Sunday programme, being organised in collaboration with DEEP Trust, city police and other organisations, had become popular and was also followed in other cities and towns of the state. He said that drawing competitions were held to promote Swachh Bharat initiative and inculcate the habit of cleanliness among the students. Students of S.R.K. group of colleges presented cultural programmes like dances and also took part in games and sports.
