Two die in roof collapse in Vijayawada

Two labourers died on the spot and another person suffered severe injuries when the concrete slab of a house fell on them in the city on Sunday. The condition of the injured, Basha is stated to be critical.

The deceased have been identified as Chinna (25) and Dhanraj (43). Bodies were shifted to Government Hospital mortuary for autopsy. The Bhavanipuram police registered a case.

The mishap occurred when the labourers were trying to demolish an old house at Kummaripalem. According to sources, house owner Imam Hussain gave the work on contract for demolition of the building to one Ramu. While six workers were engaged in the work, the roof suddenly came down crashing on them.

Dhanraj and Chinna died instantaneously and Basha sustained serious injuries while the other workers escaped unhurt.

Vijayawada MP Kesineni Srinivas, Mayor Koneru Sridhar, Vijayawada Municipal Commissioner Veerapandian and other officials visited the spot.

The Commissioner said that action would be initiated against the house owner who did not put in place precautionary measures.
