Top cop turns nostalgic on his visit to alma mater

An alumnus of Andhra Christian College, Additional Director-General of Police and Director of M.P. Police Academy, K. Maria Kumar, proudly recalls the moments he spent at his alma mater.

Mr. Kumar, who hails from Rentachintala village in Gurazala mandal, was a student of B.Sc (Chemistry, Botony and Zoology) during 1974-78, and he later went on to do MBA at Nagarjuna University before entering Civil Services in 1985.

The senior officer has been a regular visitor to the National Police Academy in Hyderabad training IPS officers.

During a recent visit to Guntur as part of the reunion celebrations at the college, Mr. Kumar turned nostalgic as he recalled the days he spent at the college. The event was organised recently by Andhra College principal P. Mutyam and A.C. College of Law principal Royal S.D. Lam.

“I was clearly overawed by the presence of my lecturers, most of them highly qualified with Ph.Ds from European and American countries. Some of them like P. Prabhu Das (Chemistry) and C. Devadanam were ahead of their times, as they inspired us through their lectures,” Mr. Kumar said.

The college then was an epitome of academic excellence and was a hub of extracurricular activities drawing students from across the State.

If life on the campus was educative, life outside it was exhilarating. The officer smiled as he remembered his friends. “One of my close pals, D. Nagabhushunam, was nicknamed John Colorado after the famous character in the movie, ‘Mackenna’s Gold’, and we used to pull his leg, marking his close resemblance with Omar Sharif,” he said.

Mr. Maria Kumar remembers the college since it taught him to have an all-round view of the world. “I used to meet people of different tempers here, and it taught me to have a 360-degree view of things,” Mr. Kumar rounded off.
