New e-book reader will be the first to support Telugu language

It is time for the Telugus to catch a ‘Wink.' The e-book reader, which is being marketed by Bangalore-based EC Media International, will be the first to support the Telugu language.

Wink Senior Manager (Contents) Dinesh Nambiar is here to attend the annual Vijayawada Book Festival and purchase publishing rights for books in Telugu.

He said Wink is the first multi-functional e-book reader being marketed in India, which has a music player that can be heard either on the built-in speakers or through headphones.

The e-book reader is considered truly ‘desi' because it supports 15 Indian languages. Books in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali and Urdu can be downloaded directly from the e-store, WinkStore, at the company's website www.ecmediinternational.com.

Currently, there are only 19 Telugu titles available at WinkStore, but more titles will be available shortly for a price that is 25 per cent less than the cover price of the book in regular form.

“‘Wink' is short form for ‘Without Ink,' and like other e-readers it also uses e-ink. EC Media has an agreement with Ingram Book Company and already has over two lakh titles in its catalogue,” Mr. Nambiar said.

The ‘Wink' e-book reader is currently available at all major book retail outlets such as Crossword, Chroma, Reliance and DC Books, Mr. Nambiar said. One can also place an order on the Internet and the ‘Wink' will be delivered within two working days.

Though the gadget is priced at Rs.11,500, it will be available on discount at Rs.9,000 till January 10 during the book festival days, Mr. Nambiar saids.
