It was a different day for students of Atkinson High School, Gollapudi, on Wednesday. They were all excited and had fun attending The Hindu Newspaper in Education (NIE) classes, which commenced on their campus.

“The objective of NIE is to create awareness among students about various topics. Emphasis is laid on developing reading habit among students and sensitising them about contemporary issues,” said S. Saileela, resource person from The Hindu NIE.

Cognitive skill development

Modules like language skills, skill enhancing games, behavioural skills, public speaking, listening skills, reading and writing skills, Vedic Mathematics and social and cognitive skill development are designed and conducted for students from Standard VI to X. Besides, special focus is laid on enhancing academic performance through time management, study skills and revision skills, she said, addressing students during the inaugural session. “Despite being good in their academics, most students lack confidence to speak in public or participate in essay writing competitions and other contests. Perhaps, this is mainly owing to the undue stress on regular academics at the cost of other skills, and NIE sessions come in handy for them to master various skills and implement them in daily life,” said Mary Sophia, principal Atkinson High School, Gollapudi. This year, NIE sessions will be conducted in schools at Vijayawada, Gollapudi, Gudivada and Tenali.
