Continuing their stir, the textile merchants staged protest against the state government’s move to bring textiles under the list of sensitive commodities and refusal to roll back VAT.

The traders gathered near Vastralata in One Town here on Tuesday as part of their agitation. They raised slogans against the VAT and inclusion of textiles in sensitive commodities list. Mylavaram MLA and Telugu Desam Party district president Devineni Umamaheswara Rao and others expressed their solidarity to the agitating traders.

Mr. Umamaheswara Rao said if the Congress failed to heed the textile traders’ plea, the TDP would de-list the textiles from sensitive commodities list as soon it came to power. The Telugu Desam would also do away with the Value Added Tax (VAT) on textiles, he said, referring to TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu’s assurance.

The textile traders said that they would continue their protest until the government withdrew the one per cent VAT on textiles. Blaming the government that there was no consultation with the merchant associations in fixing the VAT before it was decided, they said there are plans afoot to launch several modes of protest.

Tailors bandh

Extending solidarity to the agitating cloth traders against the VAT, the Tailor Workers Welfare Association of Andhra Pradesh has decided to observe bandh of all tailoring shops in the state on March 14.

Tailor Workers Welfare Association Joint secretary V. Madhusudhana Rao said the tailors association’s meeting held here on Tuesday decided to down the shutters of all tailoring shops to express the solidarity to the agitating cloth traders. The government was requested to abolish the VAT on textiles which is not in vogue in another state, he said. Association president Ch. Ramalineswara Rao presided over the meeting.
