Armed forces of the Indian Coast Guard, who were on a tour from Chennai to Visakhapatnam, organised an awareness meeting for fishermen in Campbellpet on Tuesday. They gave tips to the fishermen on the dos and don’ts.
The Coast Guard personnel, who are celebrating the 36 Raising Day, are organising a bike rally titled ‘Team Dost’ in the coastal districts.
A 14-member team headed by Sergeant Lt. Chandran is participating in the tour.
The rally, which began on February 1, went through Nellore, Prakasam, and Guntur districts, and reached Machilipatnam on Monday.
“Team Dost will reach Visakhapatnam on February 6,” said Krishna district Superintendent of Police J. Prabhakara Rao.
Addressing the meeting, Lt. Chandran explained the fishermen about the documents to be carried while venturing into the sea and the steps to be taken for maintain health.
He explained to the locals about the papers that should be produced during coast guards’ inspection and diseases caused by salinity. Medicines were also distributed to the fishermen. Villagers of Campbellpet, Chilakalapudi, and other areas attended the meeting.
Coastal security
As regards security along the coast, the officers asked the island villagers to alert the coast guards on movements of foreigners or suspicious persons in the sea and help the government prevent entry of terrorists, militants, and the ISI agents into the country through the sea route. “It is our duty to protect our motherland. If you find any suspects moving around the coast, please pass on the information by calling from a mobile phone the toll-free number 1514, prefixing the local STD code. You can also utilise our services if you are in danger,” said officer Ravula Raju.
