The indefinite fast launched by Telugu Desam Party, Machilipatnam constituency in-charge and Telugu Yuvata Krishna district unit president Kollu Ravindra, demanding release of water for Krishna Delta, entered the third day on Wednesday.
The Opposition party was organising different agitations for the last 60 days demanding release of water from Nagarjunasagar to Prakasam Barrage, for irrigation and drinking purposes.
Mr. Ravindra said that Krishna delta area farmers, who obtained rights on Krishna water by constructing anicut across the river 150 years ago, are now getting water at the mercy of Telangana and Rayalaseema leaders.
‘A failure’
The government had failed to argue the case for release of water even under MDDL properly in the A.P High Court, and the case was adjourned to September 10, he alleged and demanded the government to find a permanent solution to the problem.
The rainfall in the district a couple of days ago will give temporary respite to the farmers, but problem will arise after a few days when second watering is needed under Krishna delta, said Mr. Ravindra.
Party state secretary Kongalla Pullaiah said that the farmers were suffering in Krishna, Guntur, East and West Godavari and Prakasam districts, owing to poor planning of the government. He demanded the government implement Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations to save farmers in the State.
Legilative Council Member Yelamanchali Babu Rajendra Prasad, former MP Gadde Rammohan Rao and All India Kisan Mahasabha vice-president Kolli Nageswara Rao visited the fasting camp.
Telugu Rythu district secretary Pachigolla Kondal Rao, leaders Goku Satyanarayana, P. Shekar, H. Babji Rao, and R. Venu Babu observed relay fasts in the camp on Wednesday.
