The CPI(M) has asked the TDP to make its stand clear on its ties with the BJP in the light of the Centre denying Special Category Status to Andhra Pradesh.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, party State secretary P. Madhu said that the Centre has dashed the hopes of the people on the issue.

“The TDP has not been clearing the air on continuing its alliance with the BJP. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has been asserting that the alliance with the BJP is for the development of the State. If it were so, why is the TDP not mounting pressure on the Centre? Why is it not severing its ties with the BJP following public sentiment?” he asked.

In the run-up to the elections in 2014, both the TDP and BJP had promised to accord special status to Andhra Pradesh. The BJP failed to implement the provisions of the AP Reorganisation Act. The people were being deceived for the last two years and the TDP was remaining silent. People would doubt the credentials of the TDP if it failed to respond to the situation, he said.

Mr. Madhu said that the government should take the opposition parties into confidence. The party was ready to extend its support if the government was ready to mount pressure on the Centre, he said, adding that the CPI(M) would launch an agitation along with other Left and democratic parties.
