TD MLAs express concern over fall in tobacco price

April 16, 2010 01:22 pm | Updated 01:22 pm IST - GUNTUR:

A delegation of Telugu Desam members led by Mylavaram MLA Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao and Nandigama MLA Tangirala Prabhakara Rao met Tobacco Board Chairman J. Suresh Babu and expressed their concern over the fall in Flue Cured Virginia Tobacco prices. Mr. Rao along with tobacco farmers urged the Chairman to use his good offices to increase the prices.

Dr. Suresh Babu said that it has been a roller-coaster ride so far and urged the farmers to understand the current scenario where the supply was exceeding demand. Though farmers in AP had repeatedly ignored the Board's warning and raised excess crop, the Board stood by them during the hour of crisis, he said. The prices of Tobacco grown in the Southern Black Soils would pick up gradually while the demand for quality NLS Tobacco would continue for some more time at its peak.
